Mammography Technologist

SUMMARY Under general supervision and in consultation with the Radiologist performs mammographic procedures of a routine and difficult nature. Able to calculate and select proper technical factors to ensure proper machine function and determine appropriate patient positioning to achieve specialized examinations.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Must have passed the examination of the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and remain in good standing.

Must have passed or is eligible to take the American Registry of Mammography technologists and remains in good standing.

Previous experience as a Mammogram Technologist preferred.

Maintains BCLS certification with annual renewal.

ORGANIZATION

Receives functional supervision from the Mammography Coordinator and reports to the Managers or Director of Radiology.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

  1. Supports the Mission, Vision and Values of Munson Healthcare.

  3. Promotes personal and patient safety.

  4. Uses effective customer service/interpersonal skills at all times.

  5. Transfers and properly positions patients for examinations in order to obtain desired radiographic results according to physician specifications. Provides immobilization as required and protection in accordance with prescribed safety standards.

  6. Selects and operates equipment, selecting proper technical factors on an individual patient basis.

  7. Selects proper detector size, selects the correct procedure and image name consistently.

  8. Is responsible for producing acceptable quality radiographs as determined by the Radiologist.

  9. During breast biopsies and wire localizations, practice sterile techniques and prevents cross contamination. Maintains orderliness and cleanliness, including provision for the contamination free condition of rooms, equipment and personnel.

  10. Is responsible for the care of the radiographic room assigned and if unassigned, to those duties and responsibilities relating to his/her reassignment.

  11. Secures and returns supplies. Maintains stock room.

  12. Reports equipment failure to service engineering and the supervisor in charge using emails or phone messages.

  13. Maintains a positive and professional atmosphere for patient. Demonstrates interpersonal skills necessary in order to interact effectively with patients who may be under physical or emotional stress and gather and exchange patient information with nursing personnel and physicians. Must be able to diplomatically handle stressful situations.

  14. Must be exacting in recording the required patient information on department forms and radiographs.

  15. Makes judgments regarding priority of own work when high volume situations arise, still maintaining the overall priorities established by the Director of Radiology and the Mammography Coordinator.

  16. Takes advantage of opportunities for continuing education as provided by the department or seminars available for the various specialties.

  17. May assist in the use of a variety of equipment or procedure not routinely taught.

  18. Rotates within the department or other departments and shifts as required.

  19. Assists Radiologist with wire localizations and duct injections.

  20. Assists with testing for quality control in mammography.

  21. Maintains professional appearance by adhering to dress policy of the hospital and Radiology Department.

  22. Adheres to prescribed standards of Radiation Safety.

  23. Handles equipment in a responsible, professional manner.

  24. If unable to report for work as assigned, must notify the appropriate person(s) and/or Technical Manager.

  25. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
