Central Processing Department Assistant Manager


The Assistant Manager assists the CPD Manager in the development of goals and objectives for the unit. Assists in managing the day-to-day operations of the department.


  • Associate degree preferred or 3+ years of CPD experience or currently certified as a Surgical Technologist.

  • A minimum of three years surgical services experience is preferred.

  • Certification in sterile processing obtained within 1 year of hire.

  • Familiar with surgical instrumentation, OR procedures & CPD procedures preferred.

  • Previous leadership experience preferred.

  • Previous educator function preferred.

  • Self-directed professional who is able to function autonomously in a leadership role to assist and support staff in decision-making and problem-solving issues required.

  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Ability to act as a professional role model.

  • Able to assess skill levels of new employees and determine extent and duration of orientation/training required.

  • Competent with Microsoft office and other basic computer skills.


    Reports to the CPD Manager.

  • Establishes an environment conducive to staff professional growth and development.

  • Acts as a resource by supporting and reinforcing the necessary job skills and judgment of the staff.

  • Monitors the process of decontamination, assembly, packaging, sterilization, reprocessing and storage of sterile instruments.

  • Coordinates the work flow of the p.m. and midnight shift.

  • Works in collaboration with the manager in hiring process and termination as appropriate.

  • Assists manager with payroll and timekeeping records for unit employees.

  • Facilitates problem resolution.

  • Plans, coordinates, and provides unit based education.

  • Maintains employee education files including annual education requirements and employee orientation competencies.

  • Assists manager with annual discussions.

  • Accountable for department efficiencies and the appropriate utilization of resources.

  • Actively supports and provides leadership in unit Quality Assurance and Education programs.

  • Maintains own professional growth, demonstrates awareness of new trends in practice, analyzes those trends for applicability to the unit, shares new information with others, and participates in appropriate educational offerings.

  • Assists in providing supervision on weekends and holidays as needed.

  • Subject to potential hazards of ETO sterilization, hot machinery and equipment, pathogens, detergents and cleaning solutions.

  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
