19 Professionally Designed Kitchens Up Close, In Action, Make the Ultimate Up North Kitchen Tour the Biggest Kitchen Event in Northern Michigan

Traverse City, Mich., September 2, 2008—Northern Home & Cottage and the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) have teamed up for the Ultimate Up North Kitchen Tour sponsored by Sub-Zero and Wolf. The First annual Ultimate Up North Kitchen Tour happens 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, November 1 with 19 kitchens from Manistee, Traverse City, Charlevoix, Petoskey and Cheboygan all professionally designed by a member of the NKBA.  Tickets, available at, are $10 in advance and $12 at the door.

The kitchens were selected by Northern Home & Cottage managing editor Elizabeth Edwards for their variety of styles, well-executed designs and fine craftsmanship. The tour is designed to demonstrate how the pros resolve the same design challenges facing everyone.

“In one day, attendees can see great ideas in action and up close. They will learn how to improve their own kitchens right now with decorating and organizing tips and longer term with remodeling projects big or small,” says Edwards. The kitchen is central to a house and a family.  Plus kitchens can impact the value of real estate to a large degree. “A well-designed kitchen becomes a gathering place, streamlining chores and encouraging conversations.”

Attendees will see kitchens that cook big in less than 200 square feet; a marvelous makeover of a dinky old-cottage kitchen; grand old Victorian kitchens renovated to make room for modern families and how the color red can change a kitchen. Practical how-to tips include hiding the cooking mess, storing wine and mixing cabinet styles. Additionally, the Ultimate Up North Kitchen Tour shows how changes in today’s appliances add convenience and beauty while reducing noise, energy consumption and visual clutter.

While it is possible to visit all 19 kitchens, Edwards adds, they are grouped so that no matter where attendees start the tour in Northwest Michigan, at least half the kitchens are easily reached. Locations of kitchens include:

  • Alanson
  • Bay Harbor
  • Charlevoix
  • Cheboygan
  • Elk Rapids
  • Harbor Springs
  • Indian River
  • Kewadin
  • Lake Leelanau
  • Manistee
  • Petoskey
  • Suttons Bay
  • Traverse City

Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 the day of the event. To purchase tickets in advance visit or use the button under the Northern Home & Cottage tab where you can also find great decorating ideas, how-to’s and much more.  Other ticket sale locations will be announced in September.

Proceeds from the event go toward scholarships offered by the National Kitchen & Bath Association and to benefit area chapters of Habitat for Humanity.  The event is sponsored by Sub-Zero and Wolf through Trevarrow, Inc. who works with retailers and professional kitchen designers to provide the highest quality kitchen equipment in the industry.
