As many are aware, winemaking in northern Michigan can be quite a complicated task. The growing season is shorter, winters harsher, and Michigan weather can be, well, fickle. Some years, winemakers get the perfect combination of sunshine, rain, and cool days to produce an ample harvest full of deliciously crisp, fruity grapes. While other years, vintners are battling excessive rain and early frosts just to get a small amount of fruit off the vines. While wineries around the world may view this as a hindrance, the team at Chateau Grand Traverse (CGT) used this as inspiration for a brand new “Small Lot” collection of wines.
What are Small Lot wines? They’re stylistic winemaker creations shaped by the growing season, fruit-style qualities, vineyard blocks, or simply winemaker inspiration. They’re small production, one-of-a-kind, limited-edition wines, never to be repeated. The 2020 harvest season was one of the largest CGT has had and produced a wide variety of grapes for winemakers Bernd Croissant and Kurtis Berry to experiment with.
“The Small Lot wines were created on the basis of being able, as winemakers, to develop something both unique and expressive to these varietals. They are fun and playful wines with loads of personality.” says Assistant Winemaker, Kurtis Berry, “We are excited for wine lovers to experience these morsels of goodness.”
The Small Lot wine collection includes a 2020 Muscat Ottenel, Grüner Veltliner, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris. All of these wines, aside from Pinot Gris which will be released in another couple of weeks, are exclusively available in the CGT Tasting Room. There are only a couple hundred cases available of each wine, so they will only be available to taste or purchase directly from the winery.
“This was a really fun collaboration to work closely with my winemaking team to create these exceptionally expressive, small production wines,” added Owner, Eddie O’Keefe.
The team at CGT looks forward to seeing both visitors and locals back in the tasting room for tastings, wine by the glass, charcuterie, and shopping, but if you’re unable to make a trip to Old Mission Peninsula, you can also now shop their entire wine selection, including the Small Lot wines online!
