Located in the heart of downtown Charlevoix, Hotel Earl has officially opened its doors.

Hotel Investment Services Inc (HIS), a Michigan based hotel management company, is excited to announce the long-awaited opening. Fresh from a recent redesign, Hotel Earl of Charlevoix—named after the original architect, Earl Young, is a trendy boutique hotel with a chic and inviting vibe. More than a hotel, this mid-century modern getaway offers a nod to vintage history with a contemporary ambiance and a convenient location just steps from Round Lake and located in the heart of downtown Charlevoix.

Silva Property Management purchased and developed the property. The design team encompassed Northern Michigan experts in the hospitality industry, including KLK Design, Shoreline Architecture and Hotel Investment Services, Inc.

The original hotel, known as Earl Young’s Weathervane Lodge, was built in 1959. Young constructed homes in the mid-century modern era of architecture and is known for his construction of Charlevoix Mushroom Homes, Boulder Park and Boulder Manor.

The design team was very passionate about preserving much of the original architecture and details while incorporating new elements designed to emulate Young’s original concept.

The hotel will continue to be owned by Paul and Jennie Silva. They will remain active in the oversight of the property. Paul Silva says, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to continue the legacy of this property and am proud that we were able to embrace the origins of this hotel while creating a modern showpiece destination.”

Mr. Silva adds, “The hotel was designed to be a social hub for visitors and locals alike. The hotel will provide guests an unexpected yet authentic Northern Michigan experience.”

The hotel’s 56 thoughtfully appointed guestrooms include the Earl Suite—the largest, most prized suite located on the third floor boasts a balcony overlooking Michigan Avenue with views of Round Lake. This suite is designed for socializing with more than 1,500 square feet of living space featuring a bedroom, a full kitchen, a washer/dryer, two bathrooms, a large balcony and a living room with a fireplace.

Interior design elements include the use of live-edge wood featured throughout the building including headboards, the boardroom table and lobby communal tables. Custom millwork is showcased in the lobby bar area and vestibule providing a warm earthy character. Guestrooms feature bold quartz countertops, vintage, old-style Victrola Bluetooth radios, statement décor including hand-painted murals by local artist Kris Beemsterboer and modern pops of color which embrace the origins of this stunning property.

Other stand-out features include a sophisticated boardroom and enhanced fitness center. The lobby wine bar will feature trendy hand-crafted cocktails and an extensive Michigan craft beer selection. Locally sourced pastries and a Higher Grounds signature Hotel Earl coffee blend will be served for the hotel’s continental breakfast. Coming soon will be the spectacular rooftop deck, indoor pool and outdoor hot tub.

“We are delighted to add Hotel Earl of Charlevoix to our collection of independent and branded properties,” says HIS CEO Ron Wilson. “The property will soon set the new standard of hospitality in Northern Michigan and we are excited to be part of this journey.”
