The overlooks at Empire Bluff, Pierce Stocking, and Pyramid Point offer killer views throughout the summer. But the scene gains drama when you catch it as dozens of yachts are sailing through the Manitou Passage in the Chicago to Mackinac Island boat race.

Every year, hundreds of crews take on the more than 300-mile challenge on Lake Michigan, which this year kicks off July 23. Generally, it takes most yachts a couple of days to reach Northern Michigan. But to perfectly time your hike up to one of the dune overlooks, try using the Chicago Yacht Club’s live tracking tool, which can pinpoint the location of any boat in the race and provide background info.
