Sometimes, you just need to get your craft on. And when a highly-educated art professional with immense creative talent and a contagious bubbly personality helps you create something beautiful, a good time is guaranteed. Debra Coburn recently opened her Glass Artz studio in downtown Traverse City, hosting glass fusion and glass mosaic classes for individuals and groups, creating that crafty environment.
After studying techniques from all over the country, Debra loves bringing her skills to Northern Michigan. She’s taught at Northwestern Michigan College, and for special art events at The Botanic Garden and Twisted Fish Gallery. Plus, she is scheduled for stops at the Oliver Art Center in Frankfort and the Crooked Tree Arts Center in Petoskey this July. But Debra teaches classes at her convenient new downtown Traverse City location at 441 E. Front Street on a regular basis.
These DIY glass classes include learning how to cut curves and shapes out of glass, placing techniques, and working with different types of glass. Then students’ glass is melted (fused) in-house and they can pick up their creations the following week. Both beginning and experienced artists are welcome.
“I love when my students make stuff; it’s very different from mine. Everyone has a different expression. It’s fun!” says Debra.
Each one of Debra’s classes focuses on a particular piece for students to create. They range from glass garden stakes (pictured above), glass coasters, dishes, vases, wind chimes, night lights, jewelry and more. Pre-registration for classes is encouraged by contacting Debra at dartzy@charter.net or by calling 231.360.0667.
Debra not only teaches at her Glass Artz studio, but her glass art pieces are also on display for purchase. Her non-teaching studio hours are Mondays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. beginning June 6.
Consider a class at Glass Artz for your next Girls’ Night Out or Traverse City bachelorette party!
