The 2015 Northern Home & Cottage Home Tour in the Petoskey area takes place on Saturday, October 10 from 10 am to 5 pm. The tour treats tourgoers to 10 homes, each chosen for their distinctive style and/or innovative lifestyle concept. Proceeds raised during the home tour will benefit Northern Michigan non-profit, Child and Family Services of Northwestern Michigan. If you’ve ever dreamed of living in a rambling yellow farmhouse with waving willow trees and a big red barn in the yard, don’t miss this tour home. Then again, if you have a penchant for sleek mid-century modern style and Euro cabinetry, you’ll want to stop here as well. Guided by designer Sandra Bargiel of B.C.D. Interiors and Bay Cabinetry & Design Studio, Matt and Courtney Font have successfully blended the styles. The effect is unexpected, cool and makes you wish you lived here.

The core of the farmhouse, set on a bucolic road outside bustling Petoskey, dates from 1896. A previous owner added a large kitchen in the 1980s. A fortuitous (especially for that decade of ungainly style!) wall-sized bank of double-hung windows that match the ones in the original home are all that remain of that Brady Bunch–era kitchen. Now, cabinetry by the Italian company Arosa Mobilia defines the space. In a fitting balance of styles, the Arosa Mobilia cabinets are mixed with glossy white cabinetry provided by the Amish company Ayr.
This perfectly functioning kitchen with its high-end stainless Thermador appliances also sports marble and custom–fabricated stainless steel countertops and a black walnut dining slab that T-s from the prep island. An apple green banquette teases from the corner, chairs and lighting that could star in an episode of Mad Men add sophisticated drama, and a charcoal-colored Brazilian slate floor pulls it all together.
