Twice a year, some of the best restaurants of Petoskey and Bay Harbor participate in Petoskey Restaurant Week featuring special 3 course menus for unbeatable prices. This May, Petoskey Restaurant Week partnered up with MyNorth to giveaway $500 in dining certificates at participating restaurants. We checked in with the lucky Ohio winner to find out what she loves about Northern Michigan.

When did you start traveling to Northern Michigan?
My love for Northern Michigan began when I needed a job after my first year of college at Eastern Michigan, and I took one at Mackinac Island. I traveled a few times from the island to Traverse City and back, so I’ve driven through Petoskey but I never actually stopped there. My trips up north (my favorite stops are Traverse City, Suttons Bay and Leland) have not stopped since 1998, and I’ve recently started to look at land to maybe someday build a small cabin for my heaven away from home.

What’s your connection to Petoskey?
Petoskey will be my new place to make memories as my fiance and I prepare for our June wedding in Boyne City and celebration in Petoskey. We’ll be checking out all of the restaurants the first weekend in June so we can bring our family to the best of the best when they come up for our ceremony.

Do you like to visit in summer? Winter to ski? What are your favorite things to do Up North?
I love the outdoors, so when I travel up north my favorite activities are skiing, fishing, hiking, mushroom hunting, and my favorite is taking in the colors of the fall! I also like to shop, and of course, eat. I wish I could say I had a favorite restaurant of Petoskey, but having never stopped there, I have a blank slate to fill with favorites when we come in June. Apache is my favorite in Traverse, as well as Mackinac Brewing company—if I call a day or two ahead of time, they’ll put my favorite meal on their list of specials for the day. What a way to make a girl feel special!

What do you like reading in Traverse Magazine or on MyNorth.com?
I’ve been subscribing to Traverse Magazine for five years and the day I receive it is my favorite day of the month!
Red Hot Best is my favorite issue of the year, and I use the suggestions in it for my trips, which I try to take at least 4 times a year. I love the drastic changes of each season.

I also became a huge fan of Deborah Wyatt Fellows after reading her book, “Reflections of a Life Up North.” The first page I turn to when I get my magazine is the Editor’s Note. Her eloquent words bring me right back to my favorite places. I’m a fan of the Northern Home & Cottage articles, as well. They allow me to dream. In all reality, I’d be happy to take just one of their sheds out back to make my own.

Heather, thanks for sharing with us and congrats on your engagement!
