Two workshops will be presented in November by Susan Kohler, the NASA Education Professional Development Specialist for Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. The workshops will both be held at Raven Hill Discovery Center in East Jordan.
On Thursday, November 6, 2014, participants can receive Lunar Certification Training, allowing their organization to borrow and display lunar rocks and meteorites. Teachers and other participants will learn how to use lunar and meteorite samples to engage students and others in hands-on, minds-on, words-on activities. The activities and NASA educational websites introduced will provide new curriculum ideas and all participants will be qualified to obtain and use lunar and meteorite samples in their classrooms, libraries or other locations.
On Friday, November 7, 2014, the NASA workshop will focus on Engineering Design for STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics) Teachers. This STEM workshop will guide participants through hands-on and inquiry based learning activities related to Newton’s laws and the Engineering Design process. Educators will practice the 21st Century Learning Skills including: solving problems, collaboration and evidentiary arguments. Participating educators will be able to use what they have learned at this workshop to engage their students in problem-based learning, solving STEM challenges using inquiry based science activities from NASA curriculum guides. The activities and NASA educational websites introduced will provide educators with new ideas.
