Take your kids to see a Northern Michigan event in Traverse City that they won’t forget—it’s Peter Pan, Jr. at the Old Town Playhouse Main Stage Theatre! This stage event tells the timeless tale of a boy’s wish to never grow up, but there’s a catch: the production is performed by the campers enrolled in Old Town Playhouse’s four-week performing arts camp. So take them along for a modern retelling of the classic story—who knows, when they see their peers performing on stage, maybe they’ll want to enroll in the camp and indulge their inner thespian, too.

The Old Town Playhouse Young Company

A vital part of the Old Town Playhouse, the Young Company—formerly known as Traverse City Children’s Theatre—offers education and performance opportunities for children ages 3 to 18. The four-week summer camp, as well as a one-week intensive camp, have become cornerstone features for Young Company as well as the OTP at large, and this summer’s productions are no exception.

Young Company is led by OTP Education Director Mychelle Hopkins, who has received critical acclaim nationally and internationally as a director and actress throughout her accomplished career. She has over 30 years of experience in the professional theatrical world including stints at the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre, the Houston Shakespeare Festival, and The Royal Shakespeare Company among many others, and studied as a Fulbright Scholar at the prestigious Shakespeare Institute in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. Hopkins is committed to providing an experience that teaches campers serious performing skills in a fun and accepting atmosphere. She has been an asset to the OTP and helped cement Young Company as a significant aspect of the theater since she joined the Playhouse in 2008.

Peter Pan, Jr.

Campers participating in this summer’s Young Company four-week camp will be performing Peter Pan, Jr. — a contemporary adaptation of the Disney film and J.M. Barrie’s epic play. It will include appearances by all your favorite characters, from Captain Hook to the Lost Boys, and it will be guaranteed fun for the whole family!

There will be three chances to catch the play: Friday, July 18 at 7 pm; Saturday, July 19 at 2 pm; and Saturday July 19 at 7 pm, all at the OTP MainStage Theatre. Tickets and more info are available at MyNorthTickets.com:

101 Dalmatians Kids

The one-week intensive performing arts camp is a bit of a different beast. Instead of having four-weeks to put on a production, campers only have 5 days to perfect a minimal version of a classic play. This year, the one-week camp will perform 101 Dalmatians Kids: an exciting musical interpretation of Pongo and Perdita’s journey to save their multitude of pups from the infamous Cruella De Vil’s evil plan to turn them into a fur coat. It will be sure to have you and your family in stitches!

This year’s one-week camps are taking place August 11-15 and August 18-22. The first camp’s productions will take place on Saturday, August 16 @ 2 pm and 7 pm; the second camp’s productions will be held on Saturday, August 23, also @ 2pm and 7 pm. All performances will be at the OTP MainStage Theatre. Tickets for all four productions of Young Company’s 101 Dalmatians Kids are available for purchase at MyNorthTickets.com:
