The 2014 White Pine Stampede returns on Saturday, February 1st. This year’s stampede will include the first-ever 50-kilometer race.
Established in 1977, the event has been held on the first Saturday of February every year since—with the exception of the snow-deficient year of 2012. Originally a 50 kilometer race from Frederic, Michigan to Mancelona, Michigan, the Stampede now consists of three separate events. There will be two competitive races: a 50-kilometer race and a 20-kilometer race, both of which begin in Mancelona and end at Shanty Creek Resorts in Bellaire. There will also be a 10-kilometer timed but non-competitive event available for those who wish to take a more leisurely trip.
For the past 27 years five dollars from each entry, together with other voluntary gifts, has been donated to the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Foundation. To date, more than $85,700.00 has gone to the Ophthalmology Department of the hospital. Each entrant will receive a specially designed and dated tee shirt, when they register, as part of their entry fee. Finishers of their chosen event will receive a medal commemorating their accomplishment as they cross the finish line. The competitors in the 50 kilometer and 20 kilometer races are divided into classifications based on the style of skiing, (classic or freestyle), gender and age. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in each class.
