Beaches on Lake Michigan

Lake Michigan Beach

With its white sand and amenities close by, Lake Michigan Beach is the perfect place to spread your towel for a day. Find a concessions stand, picnic area restrooms, playground and lifeguards at Lake Michigan Beach and know that the lively eateries and boutiques of Charlevoix are just a walk away along the lovely Pine River Channel. Expect great Petoskey stone hunting and enjoy the wooded trails and Lake Michigan sunsets.

Find it: West along the Pine River Channel on the north side of the bridge in downtown Charlevoix.

Mount McSauba – North Point Natural Area

This more off-the beaten path beach is in a natural area with dunes that roll down to a sandy beach. Find trails but no lifeguards or facilities.

Find it Heading northeast out of Charlevoix on US 31, turn left (north) at the Charlevoix Golf Club on Mercer Rd. Left on Pleasant St., right on McSauba Ave.

Fisherman’s Island State Park

Seven miles of Lake Michigan beach make for a beachcombers dream at Fisherman’s Island State Park. There’s camping, too, so go ahead and bliss away a couple days in any of 80 rustic sites—15 of which are nestled in the shoreline dunes. You’ll need a State of Michigan Recreation Passport to enter.

Beaches on Lake Charlevoix

Depot Beach

With lifeguards, playground, restrooms and a picnic area this is a lovely place to spend a day on Lake Charlevoix. There’s also an historical museum in the old train depot.

Find it: Head north out of Charlevoix a half-mile and turn right on Mercer Blvd.

Ferry Avenue Beach

Ferry Beach is also located on Lake Charlevoix. The gently sloping sandy swimming area is a popular beach for parents and their children. Ferry Beach offers lifeguards, playground equipment, a concession, picnic areas, and restrooms.

Find it:  Belvedere Avenue east from downtown.

Mt. McSauba

This sweet little community winter sports park  (ranked as one of the top 3 ski areas in the country) with a gazillion-dollar lake Michigan view, makes winter into a wonderland of fun. Find skiing, snowboarding, a terrain park, skating rink, sledding hill, snowshoeing , cross-country trails, rental equipment, lessons and snack bar. Six runs are served by four rope tows.  Boyne Mountain 60 runs, 500 foot vertical and lodging that comes in all shapes and sizes. Yep, that’s Boyne Mountain, part of the Boyne USA ski resort kingdom—and it’s only 20 miles from Charlevoix.

Find it: From US 31  just north of Charlevoix turn west on the Charlevoix-Boyne City Rd. (CR-56). In Boyne City take a slight right on N. Lake  St., then a left on State St. Take the 2nd right on N East St. (M 75), then the second left onto E. Waters St., Follow M-75 and to US 131 go right. Then a right on Boyne Mountain Rd.
