This year, do what the thousands who voted for the 2013 Red Hot Best Northern Michigan Trail on MyNorth.com: Hike the hands down favorite, Sleeping Bear Point Trail in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. There is no bad weather on this trail that begins near the Sleeping Bear Point Coast Guard Station Maritime Museum in Glen Haven. There is only dramatic weather or serene days.

Bundle up in a down jacket or slather on the sunscreen, either way this sandy path takes you from the clouds to towering views of  Sleeping Bear Bay. In between you’ll find wild grapes, poison ivy (stay on the path!), rolling dunes and dune canyons.

Need directions and a park pass? Stop in at the Glen Haven General Store (now operated by the National Park Service) on M-109 in the teeny tiny heart of wee Glen Haven.
