Pat Campbell loves cooking and he especially loves cooking breakfast for his grandchildren. And now that designer Jill Brecheisen has helped design the kitchen of his (and of his wife Ellen’s) dreams, he is going to love cooking even more. The kitchen is set on the lake side of the Campbell’s new classic-style cottage on Walloon Lake near Petoskey. Like the rest of the cottage, the kitchen is outfitted with the kind of architectural details that spell vintage Northern Michigan cottage: beadboard ceiling, painted wood beams, double-hung windows, hand-scraped wide-planked wood floor and handsome custom trim. Cabinetry panels disguise the modern KitchenAid dishwasher and Sub-Zero refrigerator.
While the cabinets and ceiling are all cottage-white, a prep and storage island embellished with furniture-style legs and stained pewter gray lends an air of tradition. A butler’s pantry outfitted with wine storage rounds out this beautifully efficient kitchen. Marble countertops and a matching marble range back splash pull the white and gray color theme together.
With its mantel-style hood that matches the cabinetry, the range is one focal point of the kitchen. But for Pat and Ellen, the true focal point will be when they turn from the stove on summer days and see their grandchildren seated at the custom beadboard banquet across the room.
