The Clark family is opening its Cherry Bowl drive-in movie theater for the 6th decade as a summer movie spot on Friday May 17 and Saturday May 18. That’s right folks…60 years of serving you and your family with the finest in film, food, fun, and family entertainment and Northern Michigan’s largest movie screen. The first movies of the 2013 season have been booked:Â Oz The Great And Powerful (PG) and Iron Man 3(PG 13)! As always, the Cherry Bowl double feature starts at dusk, rain or shine.
The Cherry Bowl Drive In Theatre opened in 1953 in Northwest Michigan, the Cherry Capital of the world. In the late 1950’s the screen tower was widened to accept the “New” phenomenon, “Cinemascope,” a larger aspect ratio than was previously available.
Look closely during the “Vintage” cartoons to see the size of movies before cinemascope.
True to its roots, the sound system is the original vacuum tube motiograph amplifiers sending sound to the speakers at the speaker posts. These posts also light up with a warm red glow for a truly exceptional visual experience during the presentation.
Now the Cherry Bowl has the added the option of FM Radio sound so you can hear the entire sound track of the preshow, feature, and vintage footage through your own in-car stereo system. Although the Clark family still owns the carbon arc antique original projectors, today’s movies are shown using modern projectors, with Xenon gas filled bulbs as light sources, and a state of the art platter system for film handling in order to provide Northern Michigan guests with the best possible movie going experience.
