Neutrals. Haven’t We Been Doing Them for Years?

Urban motifs have taken a decidedly colorless turn and perhaps that’s necessary when your day is a cacophony of neon signs, billboards and beeping reminders from your phone. Up North our palette has enjoyed neutral basics for nearly a decade—shades that borrow their inspiration from sand dunes, the sky before a storm or the silvery bark of a birch tree. But nature comes in a spectrum up here and Northerners aren’t afraid to flaunt the beauty in elements as unexpected as a robin’s egg blue bathroom countertop or a poppy red collection of occasional tables that welcome summer on a slate patio. Or how about a taupe bedroom where burnt orange pillows announce fall’s arrival—and a twiggy table plays out the forest theme.
