Traverse City Events: Hear from the digital artist himself! Miao Xiaochun, Professor of Photography and Digital Media at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, will speak on Monday, November 12, 2012 at 7 p.m. in association with his exhibition The Real in the Virtual now showing at the Dennos through February 10, 2013. Admission is $6.00 adults, $4.00 for children and free to museum members.
Miao Xiaochun has been relentlessly expanding the boundaries of photography into the realm of new media. His most recent work involves the development of paintings from the canon of Western art history into computer models. A Graduate of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing and the Kunsthochschule Kassel, Germany, he is considered to be one of the most influential new media artists in China.
His exhibition The Real and the Virtual consists of digital video projections of his work including Microcosm, The Last Judgment in Cyberspace, and Restart and Disillusion that are based on works by Hieronymus Bosch, Michelangelo and others.
Miao Xiaochun’s presence in Traverse City is one of an ongoing series of Global Opportunity programs being offered by NMC. He will be giving presentations to area High School and College classes from November 12-14 at the Dennos Museum Center. His presence in Traverse City is made possible in collaboration with the Confucius Institute at the University of Michigan, where he will speak following his programs here.
