Traverse City Events: Come out for a free film showing at Milliken Auditorium! The Dennos Museum Center announces that the Community Cinema Series, presented by CMU Public Television, will present Solar Mamas free of charge on Thursday, November 1, 2012 at 7 p.m. A panel discussion will follow the film.

Solar Mamas follows Rafea, a beautiful, strong-willed 32-year-old Jordanian mother of four, traveling outside of her village for the first time ever to attend Barefoot College’s solar engineering program. India’s Barefoot College, where rural, poor and often illiterate women from around the world are offered the rare opportunity to receive an education, teaches them how to make their communities self-reliant and sustainable. Once there, Rafea will join women from Guatemala, Kenya, Burkina Faso, and Colombia in a life-changing six-month job-training program that will transform her into a solar engineer — and change her life.

Solar Mamas is part of the international WHY POVERTY? project, a groundbreaking cross-media event reaching more than 500 million people around the world via over 60 international television broadcasters as well as radio, internet and live events in November 2012.

Community Cinema is a community outreach project of CMU Public Television and the Dennos Museum Center.  All films will be shown at 7 p.m. at the Dennos Museum Center free of charge.  These screening events are part of the ITVS (Independent Television Service) Community Cinema program.
