Traverse City Events: Take a break from the lake and hit the books, summer school has never been so much fun! This summer, enroll children in Northwestern Michigan College's "College for Kids" program in Traverse City, which is offering 182 classes this year- the most ever- as well as some brand new programs. Classes at the Traverse City campus run for one week, and introduce students from age of 4-17 to subjects like cooking, robotics, computer and natural sciences and Spanish. College for Kids summer term lasts 8 weeks, from June 18 through August 17 at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City.

For the first time, nine classes will be held at Mill Creek Elementary School in Williamsburg (north of Traverse City), in a pilot partnership with Elk Rapids Schools. The classes, designed for children aged 4-12,  include various art and science classes, and sports like basketball and volleyball.

Some of the most popular classes continue to be Dinosaurs (first offered in1978) and the art program. New topics for lower elementary this year include Mousekercize, The Science Kid, 3-2-1 Blast Off!, and Cheerleading Camp. New upper elementary and middle school classes include Watercolors, Kid's Choir Camp, eKidz, Night at the Museum, The Amazing Race, Secret Science Recipes, Civil War Kids, and Movie Production.

Teens gain real life experience and are introduced to career possibilities with new hands-on classes in Forensics, Underwater Exploration aboard Northwestern Michigan College's research vessel (moored in Traverse City), and Recording Studio Techniques.

“The kids look forward to getting their College for Kids brochure every year and have trouble deciding which ones to pick—so many great options,” said a parent whose children have been a part of the Traverse City program for the last 4 years.  “They love to go "to college.” The nearly 70 instructors include NMC staff, area teachers, and community experts in specific fields of interest.

Most classes meet for one week-either mornings or afternoons- to fit busy summer schedules. Prices vary, but most classes cost $69 to $79, and partial financial assistance is available.
