Sleeping Bear Dunes Events: On Saturday June 9, 2012, the rest of the country gets in step with Northern Michigan's outdoor lifestyle on National Get Outdoors Day! In honor of the holiday, which "encourages healthy, active, outdoor fun", the entrance fee to Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore will be waived. Superintendent Dusty Shultz believes that Sleeping Bear Dunes is the perfect place to celebrate National Get Outdoors Day. "I can’t think of a better place to get outdoors and have fun than at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore,” said Superintendent Shultz.
Visitors who arrive at the park on National Get Outdoors Day will be able to enjoy their park free of charge. Those who plan to spend time in the park beyond June 9 will need to purchase an entrance pass for the remainder of their stay. The fee-free designation applies to entrance fees only and does not affect fees for camping, reservations, tours, or use of concessions. Park fee collection stations will be open and have Annual Passes as well as Interagency Senior and Access Passes available.
The National Lakeshore, along with the other 397 units of the national park system, will waive the entrance fees as part of this nationwide initiative to encourage everyone to get outdoors and be active in the many wonders of their national parks across America. The other fee-free days this year include: September 29 (National Public Lands Day) and November 10-12 (Veterans Day Weekend).
