Northern Michigan Events: Nurture your creativity with some hands-on experiences at Michigan Legacy Art Park, located in Thompsonville, MI, just a short drive from Traverse City, on the grounds of Crystal Mountain Resort and Spa. Outdoor workshops and tours of Michigan Legacy Art Park are offered all summer long, beginning May 22 with Watercolors by Susan Lingg. Each workshop is designed to help guests experience Michigan Legacy Art Park in a new way, from learning to identify birds by their song, to photo tricks that can turn your summer memories into lasting stories.
Watercolors with Susan Lingg
Tuesday, May 22 and Wednesday, August 22 from 1 – 4 p.m.
This class is for beginners to skilled artists who just want to brush up on their approach to watercolor. This workshop is a paint-along; Susan and each student has a packet of (2) 5×7 watercolor notecard stock with envelopes. With each card students will explore various applications and techniques unique to watercolor. Paints, brushes and paper will be supplied by the instructor. Everyone will leave with two finished pieces. Fee is $40 per person and includes supplies.
Birding with Keith
Saturdays, May 26; June 9, 16, 23 at 8:30 a.m.
Hike the Art Park with Keith Westphal, an active birder for 47 years, to identify birds by their song. Bring your binoculars to spot birds that make the 30-acre preserve home each spring.
Golf Cart Tours
Wednesdays and Saturdays beginning June 9 at 10 a.m.
Explore the beauty of art and nature at Michigan Legacy Art Park while riding on a golf cart. Golf cart tours of the Art Park are now available to guests who may be unable to hike the hilly trails; because the seating is limited to five passengers, early registration is recommended.
Photo Fun with Chris
Wednesdays, June 20, 27; July 11, 18, 25; August 1, 8, 15 at 10 a.m.
Join Chris Bickes, a previous Ansel Adams Gallery staff photographer, for a photo tour through the Art Park. Learn photo tricks that can turn your summer stories into lasting memories. Bring your own camera or smartphone, any type will do. No experience necessary. Hike to the Fort with Dewey Tuesdays, June 26; July 10, 17, 24 at 10 a.m. Take a guided tour through the Art Park with nationally recognized artist, Dewey Blocksma. Along the way, you will discover sculptures that tell the amazing stories of Michigan's history. Once you reach the Fort, you will wind through a labyrinth, learning about Michigan history as you go. A fun activity for adults and children. Each tour lasts about one and a half hours.
Sketching with Deborah
Thursdays, July 5, 12, 19, 26 at 10 a.m.
Artist Deborah Crandell will lead a class in outdoor sketching – studying form in relation to the environment and focusing on wooded landscapes. Inspiration will come from the sculptures in the Art Park as well as the Group of Seven. Artists of all abilities are invited to attend the informal workshops to study shape, form, texture, and contrast in changing values. Each class will last two hours. An additional material fee of $3 per person is payable to the instructor at the start of the workshop.

Located on the grounds of Crystal Mountain Resort and Spa, Michigan Legacy Art Park, a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization, features more than 40 sculptures along a 1.6-mile hiking trail that winds through a 30-acre preserve of wooded hills. Michigan Legacy Art Park annually recognizes those who have made a positive impact on Michigan’s history, art and culture with the Legacy Award. Please join us in honoring Bob and Jane Holdeman, the 2012 recipients of the Legacy Award. This special event takes place on Saturday, August 18 at 6 p.m. at the Crystal Center at Crystal Mountain Resort & Spa.

Each activity costs $5 per person, unless otherwise noted. Registration is required for all events at least 24 hours in advance. All activities begin at the Art Park trailhead.
