Northern Michigan Preservation: Recycle Used Carpet in Traverse City

Northern Michigan Preservation: Floor Covering Brokers of Traverse City has teamed up with the carpet recycling organization CLEAR in an effort to minimize landfill waste and promote resource preservation.

In a new effort to reduce waste and encourage preservation of our natural resources, Traverse City's Floor Covering Brokers has partnered with CLEAR (Carpet Landfill Elimination and Recycling). Based out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, CLEAR works with Surfaces Transport, the Midwest’s leading flooring transportation company, to collect and process more than 500,000 pounds of carpet and pad for recycling every week.

“Over 4 Billion pounds of carpet per year is dumped in our landfills, creating roughly 3.5% of all waste”, explains Dennis Lauterbach, President of Floor Covering Brokers. “This represents 9 million barrels of oil. We can stop this environmental damage, and provide jobs as well.”

Specializing in the design and installation of all types of flooring, Floor Covering Brokers is the largest, privately owned floor covering, tile, and window treatments retailer in Northern Michigan. For a fee, Floor Covering Brokers is now accepting all used carpet and carpet cushion from homeowners, commercial property owners and even competitors, in the interest of keeping these materials out of landfills.

After drop-off, these materials will be sent to CLEAR’s recycling facility in Wisconsin via Surfaces Transport for processing and re-use in new carpet and cushion, park benches, car parts, sound barriers, and more.
