While visiting Northern Michigan for an appearance at the Traverse City National Writers Series in the spring of 2011, Paula McLain, author of The Paris Wife (about Ernest Hemingway’s first wife, Hadley), toured some of Hemingway’s Northern Michigan haunts. Among them was the cottage of Pinehurst, the site of the Hemingways’ wedding reception in 1921. While at the cottage, McLain paused to read aloud a Hemingway postcard written to Liz Dilworth—a longtime friend and the owner of Pinehurst—from his hospital bed in Italy after he was wounded while serving as an ambulance driver for the Red Cross—three years before his wedding.
