Hi, My name is Joshua Olsen. I am a Life Scout in Boy Scout Troop 27 from Traverse City. To achieve the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout, I need to plan, develop and lead my fellow Scouts in a service project to benefit the community. I chose working with Rebecca Lessard’s Wings of Wonder (WOW) near Traverse City to build nesting boxes to help Northern Michigan raptor populations which have been impacted by habitat loss.
To do this, I am asking members of the Traverse City community to sponsor the construction of nesting boxes that would satisfy the needs of three different types of Northern Michigan raptors (Eastern Screech Owl, Northern Saw Whet Owl and American Kestrel).
We will be building cedar nesting boxes which accommodate any of the three Northern Michiganbirds. We will install completed boxes on your site (within 25 miles of Traverse City) or work with WOW to find an appropriate site near Traverse City. If you are not local and would like to complete and install your own box, we will send out kits with instructions for assembly and installation.
These raptors are great for keeping down the rodent population around your Northern Michigan home! There is no need for poisons and pesticides, let these raptors eat those pests! Better yet, these boxes are completely maintenance free.
Desirable habitat for the Kestrel is near Northern Michigan’s open fields where they have room to fly around and hunt. both the Screech Owl and the Saw Whet Owls like to nest in Northern Michigan’s wooded areas.
We are planning to build up to 25 nest boxes. Cedar planking will be provided at a discount from Lake Ann Hardwoods, located near Traverse City. Cost per box is $25. If you would like a kit shipped to you, please add an additional $10 to cover the extra cost.
