THOMPSONVILLE, MICH – Three former champions, including a Top Ten Player of the Year and a Michigan Golf Hall of Famer, will be paired in the same group when the first round of the Michigan PGA Women’s Open gets underway on Crystal Mountain Resort & Spa’s signature Mountain Ridge course, July 12-14.
Two-time champion Elaine Crosby (2001, ‘02), Lisa Fernandes (2007), and Connie Ross (2008) have a 10:06am tee time on Monday morning (July 12) as the quest for this year’s championship begins. Suzanne Green-Roebuck (1994, ’99), who joins Crosby as the only two-time winner of the Michigan Women’s Open, plays in the first group off the first tee at 9:57am. She will be playing with Laura Kueny, Big Ten Player of the Year and runner-up in the 2009 Michigan Women’s Open.
Kueny, a recent graduate of Michigan State University, could potentially play a stretch of seven straight days of tournament golf. Not only is she slated to compete in the Michigan Women’s Open but she has also qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open at Oakmont, July 8-11. In 2009, Kueny dueled to a dramatic finish at the Michigan Women’s Open with another Michigan State Alum and LPGA Tour player, Allison Fouch who dropped a birdie putt on the final hole of regulation to capture the title. Due to a scheduling conflict, Fouch will be unable to make the trip to Crystal this year to defend her crown.
Now entering its eighth year as host of the tournament, Crystal Mountain will welcome 80 players from across the U.S. (14 states) and Canada to compete for yet another $40,000 purse. Once again, the field features top amateurs and players from both the Futures and LPGA Tours. LPGA Tour winner Cindy Figg-Currier as well as LPGA veteran and recent inductee into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame, Sue Ertl will be among those competing in the 54-hole championship.
Celebrating over 50 years, Crystal is a family-owned, four-season resort with 36 holes of championship golf, one of GOLF Magazine’s Top 25 Golf Schools in America, one-acre outdoor water playground, the Crystal Coaster, Michigan’s only alpine slide, lodging, dining, skiing, IACC-approved conference facilities and the Crystal Spa.
