Winter Farmers Market Opens at the Grand Traverse Commons

Eating local in the winter just got a little easier thanks to a new indoor off-season farmers market at the Grand Traverse Commons.

Every Saturday through April, the Mercato—the Village’s old-world style, below-ground marketplace—will transform into Traverse City’s best place to indulge in fresh foods usually only available during the height of the growing season.

Around 20 vendors already have signed on to the project, offering everything from traditional winter storage items like apples and potatoes, to bread, eggs, cheese and local wine.

Foodies can even expect to see fresh greens like spinach, kale and lettuce at vendors’ stalls, as more farmers stretch the short Michigan growing season with hoop houses and other season extension techniques.

The Saturday market at the Village runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is organized by Spring Hollow Farm owners Diana and Richard Jelenek of Buckley, in cooperation with Village developer, the Minervini Group.

Benzie residents might also want to check out the Frankfort winter farmers market, which is now in its second (off)season at the city’s Main Street Recreation Center.
