The Michigan Humanities Council and the City Opera House invite you to welcome Bich Minh Nguyen to Traverse City on Wendesday, October 14, 2009, at the City Opera House.  Nguyen is the author of "Stealing Buddha’s Dinner," selected by the Council for the 2009-10 Great Michigan Read.  Beginning at 7 pm, Nguyen will present a 45 minute talk about her experiences growing up in Grand Rapids in the 1970s and 1980s as a Vietnamese-American, particularly in relation to three themes identified in the book: immigration stories, cultural understanding, and contemporary history.

The presentation is $10 per person, or FREE to students with ID.  She will be available to sign copies of her book immediately after her talk.   For more information on The Great Michigan Read in mid-Michigan and across the state, including a welcome video from the author, visit Michigan Humanities Council.

Also, from October 26-30, you are invited to participate in a unique, virtual dialogue on "Stealing Buddha’s Dinner" with people from other Michigan communities, high school students, college students, and others.  Questions emanating from Bich’s visit as well as from her memoir will be posed to stimulate dialogue on immigration stories, cultural understanding, and contemporary history.  Dialogue will occur through the "Discussion" tab along the top of the Michigan Humanities Council’s Facebook page.
