Laura Gray, a kitchen designer for Northern Michigan Hardwoods in Petoskey, helped the Vick family outfit their new kitchen in their old cabin on Walloon Lake with a beverage center, built-in microwave and other modern amenities. By utilizing the following design solutions, she translated the vintage feel of the rest of the cabin into the new kitchen.
1. Painted cabinets: Gray designed a bank of red-painted cabinets on one kitchen wall to evoke the feeling of the homemade cabinets that are common in Up North cabins.
2. Mixed cabinetry: Gray placed a wall of new maple cabinets facing the painted cabinets to simulate the way a much-loved cabin is gradually remodeled over the years and generations.
3. Exposing an old wall: Gray wanted to keep a part the old log-and-chink walls exposed without sacrificing storage space. The solution was an open shelf mounted to the log wall.
