High atop a grassy hill in the quiet country village of Ellsworth, you’ll find an elegantly casual inn worth raising a toast to: The House on the Hill B&B. Every afternoon wine aficionados and innkeepers Tom and Cindy Tomalka uncork a bottle—or two, or three—from their extensive wine cellar, and invite guests to sip and savor a few glasses in the inn’s light-warmed sunroom or grand front porch overlooking Lake St. Clair.
Wine Weekends
Several times a year, the Tomalkas host an entire weekend devoted to wine. The next one? April 24 and 25. Friday night brings to the table features a choice of wine from the portfolio of AHD Vintners, importer and distributor of fine wines in the Detroit market, as well as food by The Inn. On Saturday night, you’ll slip down the pastoral two-lane road to the renowned Rowe Inn for a gourmet 6-course tasting dinner prepared by Executive Chef Scott Lyon, with wine pairing chosen by Kurt Van Sumeren. $200 per person plus lodging; rooms $150+ nightly.
The Rowe Package
If you can’t make the wine weekend, don’t despair. Another great package for wine and food afficianado’s awaits. For $275, you can enjoy dinner for two at The Rowe (excludes tax, tip and alcohol) and a night at The House on The Hill.
