Strudels galore, bright and early at Kestelwoods.
Todd Zawistowski
We stumbled upon the canteen at Kestelwoods campground on the swift and spectacular Pine River and left in awe of the fresh, made-every-morning fruit pastries. The woman behind all those hand-rolled, paper-thin strudel layers in Kestelwoods pastry case prefers to remain anonymous, though after one bite of the apple version, with hand-sliced fruit and fresh walnuts, we think she deserves a rolling-pin shrine in her name. There’s also cherry strudel, blueberry muffins with Michigan berries, coconut cream pie, and square Napoleons with custard and chocolate and vanilla frosting. Cafe opens at 8 a.m. weekdays and 7 a.m. weekends. Ice cream and baked goods through the window until 8 p.m. weekdays and 10 p.m. weekends. Kestelwoods Campground, 10467 M-37, 2 miles south of M-55 junction, Wellston, 231-862-3476 or 231-862-3460 (cafe), kestelwoods.com.
Just a quick update for everyone that Kestelwoods has a new website. The url is:

There was quite a ruckus this afternoon at MyNorth.com offices as one of our colleagues brought in a Friday afternoon treat of these strudels. After the line of hungry editors and designers sated itself, I found one last piece of apple left. And I must say the excitement was well deserved.
