Mama’s Cherry Hideaways

A holiday favorite from the chef-owner of Traverse City’s Patisserie Amie.


3/4 cup sugar

2/3 cup butter

1 egg

1 tablespoon milk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

5 ounces chopped almonds

20 ounces candied cherries

White chocolate for dipping

Powdered sugar


Preheat oven to 350°F. Cream sugar and butter. Add egg, milk and vanilla. Combine dry ingredients; gradually add to the creamed mixture and mix well. Form 2 teaspoons of dough into a ball. Flatten ball and place a cherry in the center; roll dough around cherry. Bake at 350°F for 10 to 12 minutes or until set and the edges are lightly browned. When cool, dip the balls in white chocolate (melted in a double boiler) and sprinkle with powdered sugar.
