Job Summary: Under the direct and indirect supervision of a registered nurse, function primarily in the scrub role on the operating room team. Assist the team in providing quality individualized patient care during pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative phases of the patient’s surgical experience. This role will include cross-training in Endoscopy. On call responsibilities. Minimum Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent. Graduation from a recognized surgical technician training program or previous completion of on-the-job training program. Skills, Talents and Abilities: Work is performed in accordance with standard procedures or routines. However, some operating freedom is used to organize work, set priorities and adapt to routine operational situations. Typical analysis involves gathering and interpreting information in situations where the information is generally factual and easily observable and/or requires limited interpretation and application of policies (i.e. tabulating and balancing activities, performing routine diagnostic procedures, maintaining records where input comes from several sources). Physical Requirements: Must be able to balance, bend, climb, crawl, crouch, kneel, reach, sitting, squat, stand, twist and walk 100% of the time. Must be able to hear speech, distinguish sounds and speak. Must have near vision, far vision, depth perception and be able to distinguish colors. Must be able to lift objects weighing up to 35 pounds Position Accountabilities: FUNCTION A: PLAN/PROVIDE PATIENT CARE – SCRUB ROLE 1. Assist in obtaining necessary supplies/equipment to be used during surgical procedure. 2. Perform scrubbing/drying of hands and arms per operating room procedure. 3. Gown and glove using aseptic technique in accordance with department policies and procedures. 4. Check sterility of packs and instrument/basin sets prior to setting up instrument table/mayo stand. 5. Receive all needed supplies from circulator. 6. Arrange instruments and supplies on instrument table and mayo stand according to procedure table set-up. 7. Keep track of needles, sponges, and instruments used on operative field throughout procedure. Perform needle, sponge, and instrument counts with circulating nurse according to operating room policy. 8. Assist in gowning/gloving of the surgical team. 9. Assist in the draping of patient and surgical field as needed. 10. Hand surgical instruments and supplies to surgeon during the operation. Assist surgeon by holding retraction if needed. 11. Anticipate the needs of the surgical team. 12. Monitor aseptic technique of the surgical team, correct as indicated. 13. Ensure sterility of all items passed on to the surgical field. 14. Keep operative field and mayo tray orderly during surgical procedure. 15. Keep instruments free of blood and tissue as needed. 16. Assist with dressing application. 17. Prepare, collect, organize, and set-up endoscopy equipment as assigned. 18. Take assigned call on week-nights, weekends, and holidays. Respond to emergency surgery call within required limits. 19. Collect and identify specimens during surgery. JOB FUNCTION B: ASSIST OPERATING ROOM STAFF 1. Adjust lighting as requested by physician. 2. Assist in the application of casts. 3. Assist in preparing the operating room for surgical procedures by gathering and arranging equipment and supplies needed for surgical procedures. 4. As part of surgical team, ensure that all surgical specimens are correctly labeled, taken to specimen cart, or sent to the lab. 5. Monitor safety of patients (safety belts, side rails, securing of limbs, electro-surgical safety). 6. Assist in positioning patients. JOB FUNCTION C: MAINTAIN OPERATING ROOM 1. Obtain necessary supplies to be used during the operation. 2. Set up operating table. 3. Set up Mayo tray appropriately for operative procedure to be performed. 4. Re-stock supplies in operating room daily and as needed. Re-stock specialty carts after use. Return equipment and supplies to proper location after use. 5. Adhere to strict aseptic techniques and isolation care policies (e.g. disposal of contaminated instruments).
