Job Summary: Professional care giver working under the direct supervision of the Office Manager assigned to a Physician or Mid Level Practitioner. Responsible and accountable for coordinating the flow of all clinic patients including initial assessments, documentation, collection of laboratory tests, assisting the primary care provider in procedures, and patient education. In addition, performs patient triage over the telephone or in person in accordance with written protocols/guidelines. Medical Assistant will assess patients and advise patients based on protocols/guidelines or provider direction. Reports to Manager, Ambulatory Physician Practice. Minimum Requirements: Currently licensed RN/LPN or current national certification/registration as a Medical Assistant. BCLS/CPR within 6 months of employment. Skills, Talents and Abilities: Excellent interpersonal skills in order to lead care team and interact with internal/external customers. High level of communication skills with patients, staff and providers. Excellent follow-up skills. Ability to synthesize and interpret large amounts of data in assessment of patient’s status. Able to problem solve and demonstrate critical thinking skills. Able to thrive in fast paced work environment under stress or in emergency/crisis situations. Strong organizational skills required and ability to concentrate while being subject to multiple interruptions and changing work priorities. Basic computer skills required. Position Accountabilities: 1. Responsible for maintaining equipment used in the delivery of care. 2. Administer prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with department standards and provider orders. 3. Prepare equipment and aid physicians during treatment, examination and testing of patients. 4. Administer venipuncture, accuchecks, TB testing, EKGs and other functions as directed by physicians. 5. Know and Understand the MCIR program. 6. Performs quality controls on waived testing. 7. Observe/record patient’s condition/reaction to drugs and treatments, report this information to the providers. 8. Charts concisely, descriptively, and legible and includes patient’s progress or lack or progress. 9. Greet patients and prepare them for physician examination. 10. Instruct patient and family regarding medication, treatment instructions and other patient education. 11. Arrange for patient testing and admissions. 12. Maintain and review patient records, charts, and other pertinent information. 13. Maintain exam rooms for necessary supplies, materials and equipment. 14. Interview patient and/or family in person or over the telephone to obtain required history and accurate assessment. 15. Functions within delegated tasks, but demonstrates an understanding of data presented and brings abnormals to provider’s attention. 16. Anticipates the needs of the provider seeing the patient. 17. Provides patient information to the provider and reports abnormals to the provider. 18. Prepares prescription(s) for provider’s signature as necessary and documents. 19. Makes accurate patient assessments and assigns a triage priority according to protocols. 20. Initiates diagnostic and therapeutic measures as indicated by protocols. 21. Possesses good crisis intervention skills. 22. Initiates and accomplishes work activities independently. 23. Maintains professional standards by actively participating in continuing education activities, quality management activities, and inservices related to area of practice and age of patient population.
