McLean & Eakin Booksellers are participating in the first ever World Book Night celebration. Successfully launched in the U.K. in 2011, it is to be held in the U.S. as well as the U.K. and Ireland on April 23, and will see tens of thousands of people go out into their communities to spread the joy and love of reading by giving out free World Book Night paperbacks.
The goal is to distribute, free of charge, one million books throughout America, with the help of 50,000 book giver volunteers. Organizers of the event “…believe reading is of paramount importance in fostering a culture of thoughtfulness and understanding…” around the world.
World Book Night is primarily intended to be local, in each community, person-to-person. The “Givers” are the reading ambassadors spreading the word locally. They made three choices from a list of thirty books and will receive, free, 20 copies of one of their choices – a book they have read and loved from that list.
Eighteen people signed up to be “Givers” at McLean & Eakin. On April 23, they’ll go out across Emmet County to distribute their selections. At 7pm that evening, they’ll gather at McLean & Eakin to share their stories.
Petoskey, on Little Traverse Bay, is about 60 miles north of Traverse City on US-31.
