The fastest growing segment in adult education is online, web-based, ‘distance learning’.
The reasons why aren’t hard to find – busy people, tight budgets, and a desire to direct scarce dollars and time to specific learning goals.
WasteWater Education, a 501(c)3 based in NW MI, has spent many months developing an interactive web based platform for providing both public and professional education content highlighting the advantages and applications of distributed/decentralized wastewater technology. On the web at: www.wastewatereducation.org
People learn better as a group where they have an opportunity to chat, exchange experiences and learn from each other as much as from the presenter.
Using the Elluminate platform, which was developed for use in higher education settings, participants can see the presenter and talk with both him or her plus the other class attendees. This is not a ‘sit and be bored to death by Powerpoint’ experience!
Visual material is sent via a basic web browser – sound is either via the computer system or a telephone link. Just like in a face-to-face class, there will be snap quizzes and a high degree of personal interaction. Those with web cams are encouraged to use them.
Though there will always be a place for meeting face-to-face, this web based format offers a real chance for great education that’s both accessible and affordable – both for those in the profession and for the general public. (Many of WasteWater Education’s general presentations will be offered free as a way to build a better understanding about, and appreciation of, the distributed water recycling industry.)
Coming up in November and December is the first round of online classes.
