Great Lakes Pastel Society: Jack Richeson Award winner to exhibit at Three Pines Studio
July 23 – August 2, 2016
Three Pines Studio continues to bring nationally renowned En Plein Air painters to exhibit this summer season. Louise Pond walked past a gallery window in Traverse City displaying a pastel painting nearly 10 years ago and knew this was the medium for her. She tried to get into several pastel painting classes, all of which were canceled or rescheduled, until finally, there was an opening for an En Plain Air pastel class on Mackinac Island.
“Once I understood seeing nature through the eyes of an artist, that’s when I got excited,” Pond said.
Three Pines Studio will be exhibiting Pond’s nationally recognized work from July 23-August 2, 2016 with an opening reception on July 23, 2016 from 2-7pm.
Despite encouragement for a promising career in art from her high school teacher, Pond joined the military immediately after graduation. When she was discharged three years later she got married, had children, and still found time to purse a fine arts degree from Oakland Community College. While art has always been present in her life, it wasn’t until that fateful pastel painting in a gallery window made her realize what her life’s work was to be.
Pond splits her time between northern Michigan and Florida. Near the Sarasota area, she paints with a large pastel group called “The Light Chasers.” Since she began painting with the group four years ago, she’s consecutively placed in their awards ceremony. In addition to being nationally recognized by the Great Lakes Pastel Society for their Jack Richeson Award this past spring, Pond’s awards to date span from contests in Traverse City, Elk Rapids, Boyne City and more.
Having only discovered En Plein Air pastel painting in her early 50’s, Pond has been taking the medium by storm ever since. She looks forward to traveling the country to paint new landscapes as well as a trip across the pond to France. Until then however, “You don’t leave Michigan in the summertime,” Pond said.
