Performance of Shakespeare’s MEASURE FOR MEASURE at Hannah Park in Traverse City. Performances are free to the public, although donations are always appreciated.
This comedy is considered a “problem play” as there are some dark elements along with the comic characters. The virtuous Lord Angelo is put in charge of the town, while the Duke watches the proceedings in disguise. Angelo proceeds to imprison offenders under long neglected laws, and when Claudio is sentenced to death for having impregnated his fiancee, Claudio’s sister Isabella, who is about to take her vows as a nun, pleads with Angelo to be lenient with Claudio. This leads Angelo to fall in lust with Isabella and he demands that Isabella sleep with him to free her brother. Other characters adding to the mix are Mistress Overdone, the madame of the local brothel, Pompey, a bartender and bouncer at the brothel, Lucia, a woman of dubious virtue who tries to assist Claudio and insults the Duke, and Elbow, a constable who often uses the wrong words.
