The Oliver Art Center announces the opening reception for an exhibit of artwork by Mary Fortuna, Janelle Songer and Jessica Kovan. The opening reception takes place on Friday March 3, 5pm to 7pm and is free and open to the public. The exhibit runs from March 3 to April 7. There will also be an artist panel discussion on Sunday, March 5 at 1:00pm. This event is also free and open to the public.
Janelle Songer moved to ceramics with a background in drawing and painting. She delights in the ability to wrap a sketch around a functional object. That object, used continuously in the daily ritual of nurturing the body through food and drink, can now nurture the spirit and imagination as one takes in the subtle brush strokes, hand-drawn lines and lush colors of the floral surface designs.
Jessica Kovan is a full-time artist, educator and mom. She works in acrylic, watercolor, mixed media and collage, and says that “together these mediums can help to tell stories. Together they can create and complicate layers, colors, patterns and textures.” She offers group workshops, personal instruction, and online classes, all of which focus on helping people find a personal and playful approach to making art.
Mary Fortuna has been active in the Detroit art community for more than 25 yrs. She graduated with a BFA from Wayne State University in 1992. She has exhibited her work all over Michigan; in Berlin, Germany; Bregenz, Austria; Beijing, China; Prague, Czech Republic; Mirabor, Slovenia; and elsewhere in the United States. She is a member of artist collectives The Slippery Weasel Society and Changing Cities/Moving Walls. She worked for 13 years at Paint Creek Center for the Arts, as an Exhibition Director and Education Coordinator.
