Directors, producers, singers and others interested in musical theatre are invited to participate in a Musical Theatre workshop presented by Michael Tilley of the School of Music, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Mr. Tilley is a voice coach and musical director for opera and musical theatre. He is Musical Director for Franc D’Ambrosio’s national tours and is with the Lyric Theatre at the U. of Illinois. He has directed numerous concerts and shows in New York City and throughout the country.
Mr. Tilley’s workshop provides area music directors and young singers an opportunity to observe a professional voice coach in action as he works with young singers. Four local singers, ages 13-23 at time of application, with experience in musical theatre will be selected to assist Mr. Tilley in his presentation. Each will have a piece prepared to perform. Subjects addressed in the workshop will include:
how to coach young singers to safely project their voice.
how to develop a character, both with voice and body (acting),
how to integrate gesture and somatic awareness for the singing actor.
what to consider when selecting a piece for an audition.
what to do and not to do during an audition.
do’s and don’ts of working with amateurs in a community theatre production.
the importance of a portfolio or resume when auditioning for a show or for a college program, and
advice for students (and their parents) who are considering applying to a college musical theatre program and what to expect from a college musical theatre program.
