A dynamic two-hour, free program featuring poetry created through a process guided by poet Terry Wooten from interviews with people who have lived life in an institution. Yvonne Stephens, local poet, and Gerry Sell, local author, will read their own and others’ resulting poems, offering unique and personal glimpses into that experience. Poems written by area poets and selected for inclusion in the statewide show, Creative Minds, Changing Minds, sponsored by the Michigan Association of Community Mental Health Boards, will also be featured. Local author, Ellen Whitehead, will share excerpts from her book Shell Song, the story of her grandmother’s life in an institution. A 30-minute documentary, Through Our Eyes, Living with Asperger’s, produced by and with youth with Asperger’s, will be shown. There will be original artwork, information displays, and North Country CMH staff will be on hand to answer questions. There will be something for everyone in this evening of understanding. This event is sponsored by North Country Community Mental Health and Crosshatch Center for Art and Ecology.
