Local chamber ensemble Manitou Winds presents “Music Speaks,” a spring concert exploring the mystical pathway connecting music and words.
All five members of Manitou Winds join together with eight different instruments to present an eclectic variety of chamber music, poetry, and prose spanning centuries and genres. Concertgoers will delight in the timeless lyrical masterpiece of Schubert’s “Shepherd on the Rock” while discovering modern, undiscovered gems such as “Sun Songs” by California composer Jenni Brandon. Traditional folk songs by Stephen Foster will contrast with the zany, nonsensical poetry of Lewis Carroll set to music. A brand-new piece with poetry and music written by ensemble member Laura Hood will premiere.
Manitou Winds will be joined by special guests Emily Curtin Culler, soprano; Jessie Hood, soprano; Jean Coonrod, cello; and Susan Snyder, piano. Professional voiceover actor Jan Ross will perform selected readings of poetry and prose throughout the concert.
In their first collaborative effort of the year, local artist Margie Guyot, of Ellsworth, will provide a special exhibition at the concert venue of selected paintings inspired by the concert theme.
