Author Signing: Kit Lane, Boardman River, at Horizon Books.
Author of the Rivers of Michigan series, Kit Lane has now written BOARDMAN RIVER. This book details when the first permanent white settlers arrived in 1847 at the head of Grand Traverse Bay, the future site of Traverse City. The draw was the magnificent stands of white pine lining the banks of a river which would later be called the Boardman. By the 1890s all of the easy pine had been harvested, leaving a decimated landscape filled with brush, limbs, and stumps. But the fishing was still pretty good, and finally, beginning in the 1920s, conservationists began to lead the effort to help the natural processes to heal the landscape. Today with the beauty of the area largely restored, there is a continued movement to restore the river, by eliminating the hydroelectric dams and letting the water flow freely.
