With the ski season just around the corner, the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society is excited to look back at one of the very first ski seasons in Harbor Springs. In 1955, concerned with the seasonal struggle of making ends meet, several merchants got together to brainstorm ideas to extend the season. These merchants soon leased a portion of Dr. Frank Graham’s acreage in Pleasantview Township and formed Harbor Highlands Ski Club.
The Historical Society is excited to welcome local resident (and one of those original merchants) Wes Hovey to speak as part of the Harbor History Talk series on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at 5:30 pm. Hovey will share stories and photos from Harbor Highlands’ simple homegrown beginnings as a non-profit venture with three runs and an old school house as a warming hut. He will also share how this little local gem grew to be today’s Boyne Highlands.
Hovey’s talk will begin at 5:30 pm on the second floor of the Harbor Springs History Museum, 349 E. Main Street, and refreshments will be provided. Admission to the talk is $5 for adults and free for current Historical Society members. Reservations are strongly encouraged and can be made by calling the Historical Society at (231) 526-9771.
