Aaron Copland had been called the “leading spirit in American contemporary music” because of his activity in promoting young composers and new music. The Old American Songs are an excellent example of Aaron Copland’s efforts to reach new audiences. The sets are interesting exercises in multiple layers of arrangements. Copland first arranged the songs for voice and piano from early American examples, then arranged the orchestral settings. The final arrangement came when the choral settings were transcribed by a series of additional composers.
