Barb Reich — Become a Better Landscape Painter in Soft Pastel
June 9-10: Pastel / 10 am – 4 pm
Join award winning studio and plein air artist Barbara Reich and learn to create expressive soft pastel landscapes that are dynamic and filled with light. Working from your own favorite photographs, the fundamentals of color, value, shape, and edges will be emphasized. Barbara will share tips from her years of plein air painting to help students take their studio landscapes to the next level. Design principles, as well as creating believable aerial perspective will be covered. Soft pastel application, tips, and techniques will be highlighted, including under-painting with pastel. This is a fun and relaxed workshop in which personal explorations are highly encouraged. This class will focus on soft pastel, a medium that is very exciting and beautifully complex. Capturing moments, subjects, and strong visual concepts, with the near pure pigments of soft pastel is exhilarating, and sharing this knowledge with others is something she is passionate about. Barbara enjoys both studio and plein air painting, working from life as often as possible. Barbara is a member of multiple art organizations including The Great Lakes Pastel Society, and is a Signature Member of The Pastel Society of the West Coast.
Fee $230 (A supply list will be made available at time or registration)
The Charlevoix Circle of Arts is now taking registrations for the summer kid’s art camps as well as adult workshops. “There are five camp experiences this summer and we are very pleased to be working with Lori Bolt, Laura Kelly, Caroline Smith and Frank Hasseld who are offering some unique camp programs,” notes Gail DeMeyere, Executive Director of the Circle. Lori Bolt from St. Mary School is teaching two classes, one called Puppet Theater and the other called Art from Found Objects in June and July. She is a well-respected and sought-after camp instructor. Her husband Frank Hasseld is adding something new in August called “Tool Time” where children learn the fundamentals of building with tools and creating wooden projects.
Board Member at the Circle of Arts, as well as chairperson of the Education Committee and teacher at St. Mary School, Laura Kelly is teaching two classes with the assistance of Caroline Smith from Charlevoix Elementary School. “The summer camp classes are an extension of the year-round arts education series that we are creating at the Circle,” continues DeMeyere. “We are focusing on bringing meaningful experiences to all levels of learning from youth to adult. Classes range from fine art pastel instruction to Japanese woodblock printing taught by Mary Brodbeck from Kalamazoo, Michigan, to fun evening sessions in hand lettering. Our program is growing with new offerings monthly. The best way to stay current is to visit our website which is getting updated daily with new details.”
