Grow Benzie is hosting a class by noted local lawyer, John Daugherty, as part of the Grow Benzie Incubator Kitchen’s Spring Workshop series. All interested parties are welcome to attend, and this workshop will be of interest to both value added product producers as well as anyone wanting to learn about starting a business.
The form of business chosen for a business entity potentially affects every aspect of its operations and there are many decisions to be made when forming and planning a business. Daugherty will be discussing whether one should form a limited liability company (LLC), a small business (S-corp), or a partnership. He will cover the legal ramifications for choosing each- who is liable for what? Other matters to be addressed are: Why incorporate? What business structure is right for my small business? Can I set up my own company or do I need to hire someone to do it for me? What’s an EIN and do I need one? How does my business structure impact my tax liability?
As an attorney for 25 years, Mr. Daugherty has extensive experience in circuit, district and probate courts. One of his areas of practice is business law. His law firm, John B. Daugherty, P.L.C., Attorney at Law, is a general law practice located in Beulah serving Benzie, Leelanau, Grand Traverse, Wexford and Manistee Counties and beyond.
During his years of practice, he has handled hundreds of criminal and civil matters before the courts. As a defense attorney, and former prosecutor, he has handled cases ranging from traffic tickets to murder.
Mr. Daugherty is a graduate of Calvin College, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and an honors graduate (cum laude) of Thomas M. Cooley Law School, Lansing, Michigan. He was a member of the Cooley Law Review and subsequently worked in the then Cooley Clinic. He later wrote for the Planning and Zoning News. Mr. Daugherty has served on numerous non-profit boards. Professionally he is a member of the Michigan Bar Association and Benzie County Bar Association where he has served as president and vice-president. Mr. Daugherty also served as a member of the State Bar of Michigan Representative Assembly for a number of years.
