The second annual Aldo Leopold Festival continues the celebration of Aldo Leopold’s legacy in the Les Cheneaux Islands area, where he spent months roaming the forests and waterways, further honing his keen appreciation for nature.

Last year’s festival focused on Aldo’s time in Les Cheneaux, while we dedicated a new Michigan Historical Marker that commemorates our connection to an American pioneer of conservation. This year’s festival expands our celebration to the birds Leopold loved, and the conservation ethics he developed that manifested in preserving the many birds that migrate through the Les Cheneaux Islands in the spring.

The 2016 Festival has been strategically planned to coincide with the spring migration of songbirds, so you can enjoy seeing and hearing the dozens of species that fly in– many of whom remain through the spring and summer to nest.

Please join us in also celebrating the official opening of the new North Huron Birding Trail, which has been developed over the past year to showcase the spectacular birding opportunities that can be found along Lake Huron’s north shore! A triathlon, exploration and hiking, Dark Sky presentation, bird and flower hikes, plant walk, scavenger hunt, picnic, raptor shows, Drummond Island field trip, migratory bird talk, and much more will be offered over the weekend. Most events are free, but see individiual event details for fees.
