One of Northern Michigan’s most popular holiday attractions, the History Center of Traverse City’s Festival of Trains, opens Saturday, Dec. 14, through Sat., January 4, 2014 at the History Center of Traverse City, 322 Sixth Street, in Traverse City.

The Historic Miniature City is featured this year. Club members have been working for months to assemble a unique Traverse City miniature city experience that includes replica buildings such as St. Francis Chapel, Temple Beth El and other iconic buildings from the Clinch Park Miniature City. For our younger guests, an interactive Thomas engine will be prominently positioned for maximum fun. “The Festival is a great event because guests can control most of the action; dozens of switches move the models, it’s really hands-on,” stated Vandenberg, Club President. The museum is loaded with antique trains and other railroad artifacts provided by the Railroad Historical Society which appeal to train collectors and buffs.

Dec. 14-15 Annual Swap Meet for model engines cars, track and accessories. Sat. 10am-4pm; Sun. Noon-4pm.

Dec. 16-19 Santa visits nightly, 5-7pm.

The Festival of Trains is presented by the Northern Michigan Railroad Club in collaboration with the History Center of Traverse City.

Hours for the festival are Monday-Saturday, 10am-7pm and Sunday noon-4pm. Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, the trains run from 10am-4pm. The festival is closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

$5 Per Guest, children 4 and under are free. A family pass for $30 offers unlimited visits to the festival.

The Festival of Trains is a major fundraiser for the History Center of Traverse City, which is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, promoting and presenting the history of Traverse City and the Grand Traverse region.
