Companies Celebrate Northern Michigan’s Health Care Industry with Launch of Best Docs Issue of Traverse, Northern Michigan’s Magazine

May 14, 2008 (Traverse City, MI)—Traverse, Northern Michigan’s Magazine announced today that newsstand copies of its June issue with the inaugural Best Docs coverage will hit newsstands in area bookstores and groceries the week of May 19th, 2008. A special display is planned at Meijer’s during Memorial Day weekend. And the Best Docs issue can be purchased online at MyNorth.com or by calling (231) 941-8174.

Advance orders for the Best Docs issue have already been coming in online at MyNorth.com and by phone. Plus, Traverse has increased the number of June magazines printed, expecting higher demand by readers interested in using the issue as a resource all year. More than 60 health care offices, facilities and doctors’ private practices have profiles in the issue. Additionally, Traverse includes a list of Northern Michigan doctors featured on BestDoctors.com, making Traverse the region’s only resource for this information. All told, the issue includes practices in Alpena, Cadillac, Charlevoix, Gaylord, Grayling, Petoskey, Traverse City, Williamsburg and the Upper Peninsula.

Twenty years ago, a doctor affiliated with the Harvard University School of Medicine was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Using his professional network, he was able to get second opinions and treatment options and he survived, despite the initial terminal diagnosis. After his personal experience, he realized how valuable it was to be able to ask other cancer doctors, “Who would you see if you or a loved were diagnosed with cancer.” He and some colleagues formed a company to provide this information through the BestDoctors.com survey process. The Best Doctors in America database now has about 35,000 doctors in it. This represents the top 3% of specialists in the country.

“Our June Best Docs issue lets our readers meet Northern Michigan’s health care professionals,” explains Traverse editor-in-chief Deborah Wyatt Fellows. “When people get a referral or make an appointment with a new doctor they can look up that doctor’s profile photo. Or they may realize they no longer have to travel downstate to get health care services available here.”

Even the display advertising may provide readers with a better sense of local credentials. “One ad reveals that a northern Michigan hospital is one of six hospitals nationally to be on the 100 Top Hospitals list 10 times,” says Fellows.

Traverse will continue to celebrate and recognize the Northern Michigan medical community with a special reception and issue launch party at the Traverse City Country Club. Professional Clinical Research, FIM Group and Integrity Medical are sponsoring the event.

“We felt that supporting this notable group of physicians would be a great way to introduce our company to our health care community,” says Marilyn Wilmot, president of Professional Clinical Research. We believe there is value in conducting clinical trials that promote patients, physicians and our community. This process may be a starting point to help identify conscientious and caring doctors that go the extra mile for their patients.”

Paul Sutherland, president of FIM Group agrees and adds, “Not only does the issue recognize some of the talented medical professionals here, it educates consumers on services that are available in Northern Michigan. This area attracts and retains talented and gifted health care professionals which allows everyone access to excellent health care, whether you live here or are just visiting.”

“We are all patients at some point in our lives,” points out Dr. Gilbert Mosher, president of PMP Corporation, the parent company of Integrity Medical. “Part of the quality of our lives will depend on our superior health care facilities and the dedicated, highly trained medical professionals in Northern Michigan. We’re proud to join Traverse in celebrating and recognizing our entire health care community.”

How are the doctors who make Traverse‘s “Best Docs” list chosen?

The list comes from BestDoctors.com, a doctor-rating organization that believes physicians are the most qualified to evaluate the experience and skill sets of other physicians. The Best Doctors evaluation process asks doctors this primary question: “If you or a loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, to whom would you refer them?” But the Best Doctors evaluation process goes further: every year, a new survey is sent to physicians in the BestDoctors.com database listing the names of others in their specialty. For example, cardiologists will receive ballots with the names of other cardiologists nationwide. They use the ballot to nominate other doctors whom they think should be included in the next round of voting. Since votes are submitted and tabulated over a 9-12 month period, the database is constantly updated.
